Throwback Thursday: Handmade Soaps

Hey guys! It’s been a long time since I’ve done a Throwback Thursday post. I haven’t really been as active on Instagram lately as well. Things are busy at work and I have my personal life to take care of, so those come first. But I passed by these in the guest bathroom today and couldn’t resist. As seen on my IG account here, I present to you a few of the handmade soaps on the guest bathroom counter in our house.

Throwback Thursday Handmade Soaps

I LOVE handmade soaps. Up until a few years ago, I was actively making soaps as a hobby. I use 2 methods primarily: cold process (CP) and melt & pour (MP). I started with MP buy change at a Michael’s store. They had the glycerin base and the process is basically melt the base, color and add fragrance before pouring it into molds. I got fancy with it eventually, making full logs of cake soaps and stuff. I then tried CP and loved it. The problem is I produce at least 12 bars with each batch so I participated in soap swaps on this soap forum I belonged to. As you can see in the picture, one of them was from 2005 (which is at the height of my soap making and swapping I think). It was fun as some were themed and some even had non-soap items but fall into the bath and body category like bath bombs and body butters. Some swaps even have the recipes included to share with others. I eventually had to stop because I was producing too much for any swap and even for giving away to people I know that would appreciate them. Sometimes I’d save a few bars of soap from a swap completely because I liked the look or the packaging. Some I’ve used once just to see what the formula is like but then set it to dry so I can keep it still. The recipe booklets come in handy too if I end up liking a formula, so I can make it for myself. I have a base formula I follow and tweak that I’ve stuck to since 2004. I still have my soap making notebook where I log the recipe of each batch of CP soap I’ve ever made. I use them as my inspiration for when I make my next batch of soap. :)

LUSH Sultana Of Soap

Who doesn’t love LUSH? LUSH is a nifty brand that you will either love or hate. I say hate because some people think they’re uberly overpriced for what you get. And that’s where I come in….I put this to the test and let you know what I find and what I think as a whole. We’ll start with LUSH Sultana Of Soap.

LUSH Sultana Of Soap

Described as “LUSCIOUSLY FRUITY, SUPREMELY CREAMY SOAP”, this product comes in 3.5 oz and retails for $6.40. More beautiful description found on their website:

“Revel in Sultana’s majesty, and have a wash with the royalty of soaps. It looks like a fancy Italian dessert; a giant nougat cake topped with succulent currants and apricots. Smooth a slice of our soft decadent soap all over your body for a creamy lather and the most dazzling bergamot and olibanum scent. Your skin will be delighted and you’ll be left softer and smelling like a fancy candy shop with a touch of fruity sweetness. If you weren’t invited to the wedding, at least you can brush shoulders with royalty in the shower.”

Directions indicated on their website are as follows: “For hands, and use all over naked bodies. Get sudsy in the bath and shower. For optimal longevity, keep LUSH soap in a well-drained soap dish (away from water) between uses.”

What I love about this product? This is the part where some people will hate, but it’s what I love most about this soap: the scent. It is honestly one of the most beautifully fragrant soaps I have ever used. And mind you, I make my own soap. I have never come across a scent even close to smelling like this. Whatever it is, I want a whole bottle of it. I wish they sold a perfume that smelled like this. Maybe they do! I’ll have to check after publishing this post. I didn’t think this would smell the way it does originally just based on the name. Sultana makes me think of a musky, sexy scent like sandalwood or something. I’m so glad that I got the chance to try this one because it’s my favorite scent to date among all the products I’ve tried from LUSH. The lather is very soft and creamy. It feels so luxurious in the shower using it. It’s like taking a milk bath. It almost makes me wish the shower would last forever. It definitely relaxes me, but again….this is mostly due to the scent and scent is relative to everyone. The scent sticks to me hours after being out of the shower. I have my co-workers asking me what is the scent they smell on me.

What I don’t like about this product? If I had to be picky, the price. $6.40 for a 3.5 oz is wayyy too much and the only way I personally can justify it is that I can’t make this soap because I don’t have this scent and I’d have to go through the trouble of getting the fresh ingredients to make it (such as fresh currants). If I have access to the fresh ingredients component of this soap and the scent, I’ll probably end up making it myself (but I don’t so….).

This item is available exclusively at LUSH stores worldwide and online.

Curtain Call: Bath & Body Works Anti-Bacterial Gentle Foaming Hand Soap

Hey Guys! Another Curtain Call segment for y’all today! Today’s post covers one of the most popular products from Bath & Body Works. Here’s Bath & Body Works Anti-Bacterial Gentle Foaming Hand Soap. I usually stock up on these during either their semi-annual sale or their hand soap sales (like right now…get 5 for $15 or 7 for $20!).

At 8.75 fl oz / 259 ml, $5 is pretty decent for the amount and quality you’re getting. They have a lot of scents to choose from varying from fruity to floral. The scent featured in this post is Tropical Passionfruit. I’m not sure if this scent is still in production, but it’s one of my top 5 scents from them. It comes in a plastic pump bottle that’s typical for a foaming hand soap. The front text reads “with Aloe Vera and Vitamin B5” and “with a lightweight foam to gently cleanse hands as it kills germs”. The back of the container reads the following:

“Our soft bursts of lightweight foam gently wash away dirt and germs, while leaving skin soft and lightly scented with the enticing fragrance of Tropical Passionfruit.

OUR SPECIAL INGREDIENTS

  • Aloe Vera soothes skin
  • Pro-Vitamin B5 nourishes skin”

Bath & Body Works Anti-Bacterial Gentle Foaming Hand Soap

Verdict? I love it. The foam pump makes it so convenient to use and it smells great! Other scents I’ve used are Country Apple, Sweet Pea and Cherry Blossom. It cleans well without leaving a sticky or heavy residue like some hand soaps can. It doesn’t leave my hands dry at all. I can use this many times during the day and not worry about overdrying my skin due to washing too much. Needless to say, I’ll be picking up more of these in the next few days since I am down to just one backup bottle under my sink (I checked recently).

This product can easily be purchased at Bath & Body Works stores and online where available.

Softsoap Coconut Scrub Bar Soap

Another item I was looking forward to a lot from my Influenster Holiday VoxBox 2011 is the Softsoap Coconut Scrub Bar Soap. I mean, I love the scent of coconut and the thought of a slightly scrubby soap definitely made me giddy.

Softsoap Coconut Scrub Soap Bar

The Influenster insert boasts about this product: “Renew your skin with NEW Softsoap Coconut Scrub bar soap. Enriched with crushed coconut extract, this bar soap gently exfoliates to renew your skin’s surface, while helping retain natural moisture for soft, supple skin. Also comes in two other exotic fragrances: Juice Pomegranate & Mango Infusions and Sweet Honeysuckle & Orange Peel.”

Softsoap Coconut Scrub Soap Bar (out of the box shot)

Verdict? The back of the box states: “bar soap enriched with crushed coconut extract and gentle exfoliants”. I tried it out in the shower and was pleasantly surprised to find that the scrubbiness is quite fine. I was expecting some coarser exfoliants from this product. It smells lightly of coconut. I think the scent is light enough to pass for those that dislike coconut, but I’d say sniff first to double-check before you buy. I don’t find it very drying like other bar soaps and it does feel luxurious somewhat because it makes me think of coconut cream or milk. Bar soaps like this usually lasts me around a month.

The bar weighs 3.9 oz / 110 g and is available at most grocery and drugstores in the Health & Beauty aisles.
